Dirty Details Behind Floorcare REVEALED

Picture this, throw some dirt on the floor, coat in water with a nice smelling chemical and smear the dirty; now lemon-scented water, across the floor with a mop and leave it to dry. While you wait let’s get in to some dirty details.

Large scrubber dryers have taken over the Cleaning Industry; no shock there. They do the job better than any human with a broom or mop and bucket, reducing manual labour time and preventing a tonne of trips to the doctor with a bad back, but it doesn’t stop there… Robots.

Robots have worked their way in to the Cleaning Industry and are exterminating dirt, grease and any bodily fluids they come across in their high-tech, programmed paths but the question that dawns over many cleaning companies now is, what about the details?

I’m sure you’re all familiar with quotes like “It’s the attention to detail that makes the difference between average and stunning.”

Imre Killi, CEO of MotorScrubber ltd. is renowned for being passionate about designing and manufacturing durable, high performing machines to improve floorcare.

Imre said: “We love to gather feedback from a huge variety of buildings and ask cleaners across the world what challenges they have.”

“As a manufacturing company that designs our own machines, we love to create new products which really fix problems, improves hygiene standards in buildings and are enjoyable to use.”

Ever wondered if your cleaning methods might need an update?

Think back a minute and a half to your lemon-scented floor.

One common denominator amongst cleaning companies is the awareness of the details. Details meaning skirting boards, grouting and little places you’re reminded of when someone says, “you missed a bit” - knowing full well you missed it because it probably meant having to get down on your hands and knees and scrub, no thank you, next. But, details hygiene experts look for when inspecting buildings.

A local chef working in a restaurant kitchen explained, “they look everywhere… with torches.” ‘They’, meaning Food Hygiene Inspectors. The FSA, Food Standards Agency award ratings on a Food Hygiene Rating Scheme providing clear information about businesses’ hygiene standards, including a rating for ‘Cleanliness of Facilities’ - word to the wise, dirty floors do not accumulate to 5 star ratings.

Commercial kitchens have serious problem areas due to large scrubbers simply cannot get round small kitchens, leaving their detailed areas, dirty.

We went to visit a restaurant kitchen, ‘we’ meaning the MotorScrubber Team out in force to find solutions to peoples problems. We were quickly pointed to around ovens and underneath countertops. Claiming to clean twice a day with a broom and mop and bucket, once in the afternoon and again after the night shift. They admitted their floorcare regime could be improved, but the chef plainly stated sweeping and mopping is the easiest and quickest way of cleaning up spills in a cramped kitchen.

Side note, even in the most visible places bacteria and dirt can be left to fester over time, especially in grouting. Let’s go back to the lemon-scented floor drying in the back of your mind, just starting to crawl dry but still a blatant slipping hazard.

Tiled flooring can be particularly problematic in kitchens when fatty fluids and grease from cooking are spat on the floor. Using wet and dry mops are definitely effective methods for cleaning on an everyday basis but over time, your floor is going to need a good scrub.

Restoring the floor from years of neglect can be a challenge. The best way to get results is to mechanically scrub it at least once a week, preventing natural build-up.

It’s not just restaurants that are under pressure to keep their facilities under the standards of the FSA, other businesses including: pubs and cafes, food vans, hotels, supermarkets, schools, care homes and hospitals all have annual inspections by the local authority.

All these locations struggle to sufficiently clean corners of the room in their food preparation areas and other areas such as, around toilets, under urinals, changing rooms, stairs, lifts, office blocks… you get it. Every building on this planet has these problems, so how can it be solved?

Floor cleaning equipment manufacturers have done a great job developing machines that clean the large surface area very efficiently, but from our experience and thousands of onsite demonstrations we hear a lot of feedback from the end client ‘we love our scrubbers but still have 15% of the floor we need to clean.’ It’s the same problem popping up like a bad spot… literally.

With a huge demand for a durable, powerful, smaller machine, 2 years ago MotorScrubber started developing the world’s smallest scrubber dryer head. Now patent approved, it can be mounted onto any brand of floor scrubber, enabling the user to not only clean this remaining 15% of the floor efficiently but dry it too.

After winning the ISSA Chicago Innovation Award in 2016, MotorScrubber officially launched their brand new scrubber dryer in 2019. Shortly after the product release it was nominated as a finalist for the Floorcare Innovation Award at The London Cleaning Show 2019 and is in the running for more prestigious awards this year.

With the best machinery the industry has ever seen for floorcare approaching the market that’s not all you need to keep an eye on. Just like a phone, what fun would it be without any apps? Contacts? Internet? Dun dun duunn, I’ve said it, the machines alone are not enough. Big or small, all machines need a couple of ride and die partners, in this case: water, chemicals, pads and brushes.

We want everyone to get the most out of their machines and floorcare regimes so we matched 5 popular floorings with our favourite ways to restore and maintain your floor.

  1. Concrete Flooring - Tile and grout brush, with aggressive bristles mixed with aluminium oxide, this will remove the most stubborn dirt.
  2. Stone Flooring - Twister Diamond pads using only water will remove scratches, dirt and leave the stone shining like new.
  3. Carpet Flooring - Delicate brush for pre scrubbing followed by a microfiber pad for absorbing the dirt.
  4. Marble Flooring - Crystalliser pad and crystalliser chemical will shine marble to the highest gloss and also give a protective layer; which will keep it shining for longer.
  5. Ceramic Flooring - Medium duty brush for daily cleaning and Tile and grout brush for more aggressive cleaning.

Last but not least, the Melamine pad or as we like to call it, THE Magic pad. Due to the open foam structure when you pressurize and move the material on a surface some soft plastic nanoparticles will start pushing away the dirt and cleaning the surface, it will not harm any surface as long as it’s hardness is higher than plastic. When paired with a motorised scrubbing machine the results are truly astonishing.

It’s been approximately 5-6 minutes; lo and behold the lemon-scented floor is still not dry. It smells nice, looking nicer, but if you’re not scrubbing that floor with the right machine and complimentary products you’ll be missing out on stunning details that are easier than you think to achieve.
